In addition to all of the standard dive equipment, when diving for conservation, many additional materials and tools are needed. These will vary depending on your activities, be it research or restoration. At our program, we try to promote techniques which require little in the way of specialized techniques or equipment, in order that the projects could be replicated anywhere else in the world, by local community members.
RESEARCH EQUIPMENT
May include (from essential to optional):
Underwater slate and pencil for recording data
2 X 50 Meter reels (plastic or pvc, not metal)
Ruler, or measuring stick (may be homemade)
Quadrant 1m x 1m or 50 cm x 50 cm
Camera with underwater housing
Coral Watch Color Chart
Underwater species ID cards
At our program we also have:
Handheld GPS
Water testing equipment
In-situ temperature and light probes
microscope
specimen collection bottles
Underwater scissors/knife
RESTORATION EQUIPMENT
Equipment will vary greatly depending on the project, but generally includes:
Pliers or wire cutters
Hammer
Cable ties, wire, or string
Underwater epoxy putty
Floating markers
Stainless steel nails or pegs
Rope
Brush
Gloves
Knife or diving shears
Please note that divers in our program do not need to have their own equipment as we provide it. If however you wish to purchase your own materials, we would recommend that you first purchase the slate, gloves, and diving knife. If budget allows, having a camera both helps with research, and also adds another layer of fun to each days activities.
