Love is in the...Water! Coral Spawning with the NHRCP

One of the most fabulous natural events whitout a doubt - Coral Spawning!
For a few nights a year, three-quarters of corals are spawning sexualy and externally. Millions of eggs and clouds of sperm are released into the water in a massive and synchronised event. You may imagine that swimming into this oceanic porn would seem anything but glamourous, and yet I assure you that being lucky enough to observe such a rare sight makes you realise the magic offered by our dear Blue Planet!
The extent of spawning and the degree of synchronisation varies significantly accross coral species and geographical locations. In Koh Tao, this event happens only twice a year and only lasts for a brief moment. I was lucky enough to be attending the NHRCP during the spawning of the Acropora, Diploastrea and Fungiidae (with and without UV light)! The team has told us that we might be in for more spawning and we’re all dying with anticipation for that next event.
Enjoying this unique moment, living it with loved ones, sharing this simple happiness in life, watching the beauty of the celestial archway from the top of the boat... what more can you ask for? Present moment savoured!

L’un des plus fabuleux évènements naturels sans aucun doute: la ponte des coraux !
Quelques jours par année, les trois quarts des coraux se reproduisent de manière sexuée et externe. Des millions d’ovules et des nuages de sperme sont alors relâchés de manière massive et synchrone durant la nuit. Imaginer aimer se baigner dans ce porno océanique peut sembler tout sauf glamour, mais je vous promets qu’être assez chanceux pour observer un spectacle aussi rare vous fait réaliser la magie que nous offre notre chère planète bleue!
L’ampleur de la ponte et le degré de synchronisation varient considérablement entre les populations des différentes espèces de coraux et selon la position géographique. A Koh Tao, elle suit la pleine lune. J’ai donc été assez chanceuse pour assister à la reproduction des Acropora, Diploastrea et Fungiidae (avec et sans UV light). Et nous nous attendons à ce que plus d’espèces se reproduisent après la prochaine pleine lune d’avril!
Apprécier ce moment unique, le vivre avec des personnes chères, partager ce simple bonheur de la vie, regarder la beauté de la voûte céleste depuis le toit du bateau ensuite… que demander de plus ? Moment présent savouré !
